How translation works
Speech is recognised by the speaker’s own browser, using either the browser’s built-in speech service (Chrome/Edge) or an optional Whisper model that runs inside the browser. Text is translated by the translation service the administrator has enabled. By default this is the free MyMemory API, called through this website’s server so no keys reach your browser. Spoken English or Urdu is produced by your browser’s built-in voices.
All recognition and translation is machine-generated and can contain mistakes. Captions are labelled accordingly.
Quran and Hadith
Arabic that looks like Quran recitation is compared with the Quran text to suggest a candidate verse reference. A candidate match is not a verification of the recitation, its tajweed, or its correctness. Phrases that commonly introduce a Hadith are detected so the quotation can be protected. The app does not authenticate Hadith. Protected Arabic is not machine-translated. If the tutor turns on an optional translation, it is shown separately and labelled with its source.
Quran text: Uthmani script from The Noble Qur’an Encyclopedia, via the quran-json dataset (CC BY-SA 4.0). English translation of the meanings: Saheeh International, via Tanzil.net.
Privacy
- Audio and video are never recorded unless the tutor asks and the student agrees. Recordings are saved only to the tutor’s own device.
- Recognised text may be processed by the browser’s speech service (for example Google, in Chrome) and by the translation provider. Their own privacy policies apply.
- Lesson transcripts are stored only when the tutor enables them for a lesson, and only the lesson’s tutor and student can read them. Administrators manage the system but cannot open lesson transcripts.
- You can download or delete your data from the Account page.
